The Japery should Consider its own Catholicity
W.H. Chellis

Our friends over at the The New Pantagruel Review have taken notice of our humble introduction into the blogging universe (no doubt in response to the distinguished contributions of their editor Caleb Stegall). We are glad for the exposure and happy to be noticed but…

I fear that the June 7 review in the Japery leaves a bit to be desired.

The fictitious Father Japas takes issue with our use of the word “catholic.” We have maintained that the focus of this discussion is not some provincial doctrine but the once universal teaching that Christ is the ruler of the nations as well as the Church.

Father Japas takes issue with Reformed Presbyterians (and I suspect Orthodox Presbyterians… PCA men… or any other Protestants) using the term catholic to describe their doctrine. Of course we feel the same when we hear Romanists use the label catholic to describe Papal infallibility, or role of Mary as co-redemptrix. Ask the Greeks whether they call those doctrines universal!

Yet, the point that I have tried to make is that the doctrine of Christ mediatorial Kingship over the nations is a common inheritance of Roman Catholics, Anglicans, and most Reformed Christians. It is the doctrine of Christendom and for that I would think our fearsome “Father” would show more gratitude.

Well, at least the Japery enjoys reading Caleb. It is my hope that he will keep reading. Indeed, that all the non-Protestant brethren at TNP will be reading and that, sparked to jealousy by our debate, might help reintroduce Rome (who buried her doctrine of Christ’s social Kingship at Vatican II) to this precious inheritance.
