This sounds like a review that could evolve into a great magazine article. It could take several different tacks, but I'd be really interested to hear how this would apply at the *family* level, as guidance for how a Christian family in America in 2007 can make practical changes in their way of living to shine brighter and be saltier. Charles, you'd be a great person to write that article!

--Drew Gordon

Amen.

I am just finishing Wilhelm Ropke's masterful The Humane Economy. Ropke sounds a simliar alarm. A free economy must be restrained by the virtues of a thrifty, self-denying, middle class.

Today, growth and consumption seem to be unhinged from savings, moderation, and prudence.

Of course, a part of the church is critical of the unrestrained market. That is the liberal church. The problem is that their cure is worse than the disease. The church must not fall into the trap of advocating Marxist solutions.

Can the church defend the dignaty of God's image bearing creature by defending economic freedom?

Can we do so while being critical of the excesses of debt, materialism, and economic free-for-all-ing?

Learning self-restraint is hard for individuals (hey it is hard for me), families, and nations.
