The Protestant Kirk

I posted this on a Russell Kirk discussion group and got some good feedback. I thought it might be worth while to post here.
I object to Protestantism being denied the right to defender the
natural law.
While I agree that Kirk was not so much a Thomist as an Augustinian
you will find that the Reformers were [...]

The Sweet Smell of Freedom… er Tobacco!

Huckabee is rediscovering localism, subsidiarity, and federalism.
He has reversed his position on a federally imposed public smoking ban.
Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em.

Huckabee and a Christian Constitution

Rod Dreher has a great post about Huckabee’s reasons for supporting Constitutional Amendments defending the unborn and prohibiting homosexual marriage. Critics, myself included, have noted the ease in which politicians declares their support for Amendments and the difficulty of passing one. Huckabee responded to the criticism declaring
“But I believe it’s a lot easier [...]

WWRKD?

Today is the Michigan Republican primary. Of course, the venerable Dr. Russell Kirk was the sage of Mecosta Michigan. He and his family lived at Piety Hill.
I wonder who Kirk would have voted? I also wonder how the folks that carry on his legacy at the Kirk Center will be [...]

Fred is Swinging for His Life

And I hope it works. I cannot understand why Fred Thompson is not doing better in the polls. He is more conservative than most of the field, he is thoughtful, and he lacks the unattractive ambition that turns me off about some of his rivals.
I’d like a President who is a little lazy. [...]

Jim Pinkerton joins Huckabee

Mike Huckabee had a big day today. Not only the Crunchy Con but also James Pinkerton (or Elrond Half-elven as he is known to the Council of the West).
Interestingly, James Pinkerton is not only a Tolkien man but descends from Covenanter stock. Interesting.

The Dark Horse Scenario

The Grandam of American Conservatism raises the interesting possibility of a divided Republican convention and dark horse nomination. Check it out.

The Crunchy Conservative Candidate

Rod Dreher has made it official. He has endorsed Mike Huckabee.
I really admire Dreher and his book Crunchy Cons. I cannot say that his endorsement does not give me pause to reflect on Huckabee’s positives. Could traditionalists find a champion in Huckabee?
If Huckabee follows Dreher’s advice, goes to [...]

Barack the Baby Killer?

According to Terrence Jeffery, Obama is the most pro-abortion candidate ever.
But I thought he was a man of faith whose presidency “would create the Kingdom right here”? Go figure.

Why Mitt Romney is not a Statesman

Occasionally you hear people say that we should elect more successful businessmen to public office. After all, the government is so inefficient. If a private sector company ran like the government, it would go bankrupt. Why not elect effective businessmen? This is a peculiarly American phenomenon.
The problem is that [...]
