Orthodox, Catholic and Evangelical leaders have united to issue a clarion call in the defense of life, marriage and religious freedom.
The document, entitled The Manhattan Declaration, was drafted by Princeton Law Professor, Robert George, Timothy George, and Chuck Colson, founder of the Chuck Colson Center for Christian Worldview (Lansdowne, Va.).
With great clarity the document presents a synopsis of the cultural battles raging against the faith. It is a great reminder that while we have our differences, all Christians should be united in our struggle against secular fascism.
Leading signatories include Leith Anderson (National Association of Evangelicals), Dr. Mark L. Bailey (Dallas Theological Seminary), Dr. Robert C. Cannada, Jr. (Reformed Theological Seminary) and Most Rev. Charles J. Chaput
(Archbishop of Denver).
I encourage all DRC enthusiasts to read and sign this document. It is a call to defense of Christianity in our time.
A call to fight gay marriage, abortion and limiting religious liberty is “a call to defense of Christianity in our time.” Did you really just say that? Please say Christianity is more than that or I quit.
Don’t quit… but do get over this sense that Christianity is only about how we are justified. Christianity and Christendom are not two different things. Christendom is the good fruit of Christianity applied to the nations. It helped soften tyranny, humanize power. It was/is light to the nations and an expression of Christ’s Kingship over the nations.
I have little tolerance for the 16th Century Reformed who preferred the yoke of the Muslim to the “tyranny” of the Pope, and less tolerance for the 21 Century Reformed who would prefer to the yoke of modernism and secularism than to join the battle with folks with whom they disagree on justification.
Jared,
Please do not misunderstand my words here. This is not a declaration OF the Christian faith. It is a call to DEFEND our freedom to live as Christians in our nation and in our world. The secular attack on Christianity is powerful, well-funded, and at the highest levels, quite calculated.
If we do not unite to defend our freedom to worship and live out our Christian faith we will have it taken from us. We may be headed toward a time when Christian martyrdom is commonplace once again in the West. But we owe it to posterity to do everything we can to prevent that from happening.
The Manhattan Declaration is as clear and assertive a statement as anything I’ve read from such a diverse group of Christians. It is worth your consideration.
